This sticky, sweet and smoky vegan bbq tofu pulled pork makes for the perfect protein packed dish Add it to a burger, load onto nachos or add to a salad. The possibilities are endless!
An alternative to the popular jackfruit pulled pork and just as delicious. Honestly, is there anything tofu can’t do!?
Tofu gets grated and fried in a bbq sauce which creates a moist, chewy and totally addictive texture. It is so flavourful too, you’ll keep going back for more.
It’s such an easy recipe, with only a few ingredients. There is no need to make the BBQ sauce, although you can if you prefer.
Just make sure the BBQ sauce you buy is vegan, sometimes they add honey. My favourite is the Sweet Baby Ray Original one, I pick it up in Sainsbury’s.
As well as the BBQ sauce we are also adding a few spices to enhance the flavour. We are adding garlic powder, smoked paprika, chilli powder and liquid smoke (optional).
What you’ll need for BBQ tofu pulled pork:
- White onion
- Extra firm tofu
- Brown sugar
- BBQ sauce
- Water
- Garlic powder
- Smoked paprika
- Chilli powder
- Liquid smoke (optional)
Make sure you use extra firm tofu because you want it to hold its shape throughout cooking. You should be able to grate it easily.
How to make BBQ tofu pulled pork:
Start by frying the onion, thinly slice it and cook in some oil for about 5 minutes until softened. Add the brown sugar so it helps to caramelise it.
Add the spices and grated tofu and fry for a few more minutes until the tofu is getting golden. Don’t overcrowd the pan too much, do it in batches if needed.
Add the bbq sauce and water and let cook for a further 10 minutes.
How to serve BBQ tofu pulled pork:
- In a burger bun with coleslaw
- On a baked potato
- Add to a sandwich – anything goes!
- As part of a buddha bowl

BBQ Tofu Pulled Pork
Sweet and sticky BBQ tofu pulled pork is the ultimate vegan alternative. With grated tofu and white onion cooked in a smoky BBQ sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 white onion
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 450g / 16oz extra firm tofu
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp hot chilli powder
- 1 tbsp vegan worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp liquid smoke (optional)
- 240ml / 1 cup bbq sauce
- 120ml / 1/2 cup water
Instructions
- Finely chop onion and fry in a tbsp of oil in a large pan on medium heat. Cook for 5 minutes until softened, add sugar and cook for a further minute. Stir often.
- Add grated tofu and fry for 5 minutes until starting to crisp and turn golden. Add a little more oil if needed. Stir often so it doesn't burn.
- Add the remaining ingredients and cook on low to medium heat for 10-15 minutes. The tofu should have marinated the sauce and it should be saucy but not runny.
- Serve straight away or it will keep for a few days in the fridge.
Notes
Make sure the bbq sauce is vegan (I use Sweet Baby Ray Original) and that you use extra firm tofu (I use Tofoo.co)

Do you recommend pressing the tofu before grating it?

Hi Kayla you can do, you shouldn't get much excess from an extra firm tofu but if it isn't as firm I would recommend it :) Tamsin xo
